Psytrance Video Deconstruction

The song in hand is called Becoming Insane by Infected Mushroom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6hL6fkJ1_k) please watch this as it is a great example of psytrance with a great narrative video.

The song consists of 2 video parts, the narrative and the artists. the narrative consists of two people "becoming insane" and realy hurting themselfs, this is portrayed through the use of mainly medium shots to show the two people this is done because it helps us see that they are both wearing corporate casual costumes. This is done to show the twisted nature of the song and to challenge traditional conventions as we wouldnt expect two people in shirt and tie punching themselfs to the point of killing them selfs but it would not be so strange if they were dressed as say, serious drug addicts.

The usual conventions for a dance music video would be a full narative as there usualy isnt any instuments used other than a midi keyboard and a laptop, this is done because it isnt very interesting to watch. Although this band uses a guitar, keyboard and a singer which challenges usual psytrance conventions almost like pendulum where instead of just an artist making the songs it is a group composing different riffs and loops this is a great way of reinventing a particular sub-genre because it challenges conventions which makes it more interesting to different people.

The artsist in the video are wearing very casual costumes, just plain hoodies, T-shirts and jeans which shows the band as different to the narrative characters in the video, this is done because the video makes a comparison between sane people and insane people. Although the costumes are not as stricking as say gothic or rap they still make a statement about the artists as casual people which is challenging conventions because usualy artists will make a huge statement about what they are wearing like lady gaga, 50 cent, leona lewis.

Jumpy cuts used focusing on things like their eyes, hands, mouths and instuments. This is done because it shows them as real instrumentalist artists, not just dj's which chalenges psytrance conventions because there are no psytrance groups, only groups of dj's who make their own tracks on their own laptops which are then mixed as a line-up.

Other shots include very quick medium shots usualy with a low angle showing the artists as powerful, this is done to make them seem as though they are in controll of the two characters used in the narrative. The most important factor of the camera work is the constant movement whilst the camera is on the artists, contrasting against the still shots of mixed veriety showing the two narrative characters. This is to show how different the artists are compaired to "normal people" or insane people. Also whilst these jump cuts and close ups of the artists features are being used effects are being used constantly, effects such as distortion and double layer are used to show almost a nervous twitch also helping to create a contrast between sane people and insane people.

The band are represented to seem like insane people in the way the camera, mise en scene, editing and effects e.g. Distortion effects on the band and flat push ins on the narrative characters portrays the band characters as insane but as the video progresses and we see the sane people beating them selfs to death and the band just playing their music and the way we see them swaps and now the band who are non-conformist and "bad" are sane and the narrative characters who are meant to be conformist and "normal" are insane which also creates a chalanged convention between normal people and not normal people.

Overall the video is very effective at reaching its target audience of 18 to 22 (sources from youtube) because whilst being a great psytrance song the video challenges normal conventions of dance music by showing the artists at work whilst also showing an interesting narrative.
